Creative Courses
for Circus

Creative Courses for Circus is NEXO’s training program. An intensive course designed for artists and practitioners looking for new creative tools and a space to activate their relationship with the scene from the body, dramaturgy, composition and presence.

It is a training proposal composed of different modules and methodologies that coexist within the same itinerary. It does not work with apparatuses: the focus is on circus creativity, on scenic tools and on the possibility of opening new ways to think, build and develop one’s own materials.

In Creative Courses for Circus we understand training as a place where creativity can be put into practice, refined and find new directions. We are interested in working from concrete tools, without separating thought, body and scene, and opening a space where each participant can continue building from what he/she already brings.

More than a sum of classes, the program proposes a shared journey where each module contributes a specific perspective and, at the same time, is part of a common experience. We want participants to take away resources that can be applied to their own paths, whether they are just beginning a search or are already developing materials, ideas or pieces.

In this edition, Creative Courses for Circus will bring together several modules guided by guest artists, each with a particular view on dramaturgy, the body, composition and scenic thinking. Together they make up a diverse and complementary path, each with a common goal: to activate circus creativity through practice.

Creative Courses for Circus is aimed at circus artists and practitioners of all backgrounds and styles, as well as people from other performing arts disciplines interested in incorporating new creative tools, strengthening their relationship with the stage and further developing their own resources.

It is a proposal designed for people who want to stop, try, order ideas, open new possibilities and take away concrete methodological materials for future processes.

CCC offers an immersive training experience, where practice and reflection are intertwined. Each module activates a different approach, but they are all part of a common journey aimed at strengthening circus creativity and offering concrete tools to continue working beyond the meeting.

The aim here is not to arrive at a closed result, but to open up resources, questions and materials that can continue to accompany each participant in his or her artistic, pedagogical or scenic journey.

The program brings together several modules guided by invited artist-trainers, each with a particular view on dramaturgy, the body, composition and scenic thought. Together they make up a diverse and complementary path, crossed by the same will: to activate circus creativity from practice.

Four modules, four points of view, a shared journey

Each module is guided by a trainer with a particular perspective on the body, dramaturgy, composition, play and the relationship with the stage. Together they form a diverse and complementary journey, where each participant can approach different tools, methodologies and ways of working on circus creativity.

More than isolated proposals, the modules are part of a common experience. Each one opens a different access, but all of them share the will to accompany, expand resources and offer a base that can continue to be deployed beyond the course.

Alba Sarraute’s module proposes a journey around dramaturgy as a tool to give shape, structure and depth to a stage proposal. It is designed for those who want to develop an idea, a number, a scene or a material in process, and need tools to better understand what they are telling, how it is organized on stage and what decisions can help the proposal gain clarity, direction and meaning.

It is not only about writing or thinking a story from the head, but also about building dramaturgy from the body, movement, presence and action. Through writing exercises, analysis and creative exploration, the work accompanies each participant in the task of discovering what moves him/her, what he/she wants to express and how to sustain it scenically without losing singularity.

Durant el mòdul, explorarem temes com el nucli temàtic i conceptual d’una proposta, el desenvolupament de personatges, la progressió dramàtica, el to, el ritme i l’estructura global d’una escena o d’una actuació. Questions like ‘What do I really want to convey?’, ‘From whose perspective am I telling the story?’, ‘How does an intuition become a stage structure?’, or ‘What does this production need to better connect with its audience?’ – these are the kinds of questions Alba explores in her work.

This is a particularly valuable module for artists who are already developing a piece as well as for people who want to begin to organize materials, recognize a possible direction and acquire dramaturgical tools applicable to future processes. The objective is not to impose a formula, but to offer concrete resources so that each participant can build a more conscious and more refined relationship with the dramaturgy of his or her own work.

Teresa G. Valenzuela’s module opens a space for research on the body, space and play as motors of presence, perception and creativity. Her proposal invites us to explore how we move, how we perceive, how we relate to the environment and how all this can become scenic material. It is aimed both at artists who already work from the body and at people who want to open a more sensitive, more attentive and more available relationship with their practice.

The work is based on listening, attention and body exploration, understanding that movement is not only a technique, but also a way of creating, communicating and being on stage. Through play, perception and different research dynamics, the module proposes tools to cultivate a more refined presence, a more organic communication and a more conscious relationship with the space and with other people.

Teresa works from a broad perspective that brings together elements drawn from movement, experiential anatomy, somatic practices and improvisation. But beyond names or methods, what matters here is the experience: What happens when I stop trying to control everything and start listening? How does my presence on stage change if I pay attention to the space? What emerges when play ceases to be merely incidental and becomes a genuine working tool? These are the kinds of questions that run through the module.

This module is especially interesting for those who wish to broaden their physical listening, enrich their stage presence and find resources applicable not only to artistic processes, but also to pedagogical or collective contexts. The module does not require previous experience, but a willingness to investigate from the body, perception and relationship.

Gaby Parigi’s module offers a workshop focusing on the relationship between technique, composition and stagecraft. It is based on the idea that what each artist already brings with them—their technical skills, their imagination, their experience, their way of being—can become material for the stage if it finds the right context in which to be explored, challenged and developed. It is designed for those who wish to go beyond technical execution and explore new expressive possibilities based on what they have already mastered.

Through improvisation, physical writing, the creation of images and the exploration of different registers, the module accompanies those who want to expand their expressive capacity and develop their own dramaturgy. The work focuses on mutability, changes of register, the creation of characters, the emergence of poetic images and the possibility of building a scene without losing anchorage in corporal practice.

Gaby propone un laboratorio donde la técnica no desaparece, pero deja de ser el único centro. It becomes a starting point, an excuse, a springboard or a base from which to raise further questions: What else might emerge from what I’m already doing? How can I shift register without losing authenticity? What images, characters or theatrical worlds arise from my own physicality? How does one construct a poetics without detaching it from the body? That intersection between precision and openness lies at the very heart of her work.

This is an especially valuable module for artists who want to leave familiar places, expand expressive resources and give more depth, structure and uniqueness to their stage work. It can resonate both with those who are already investigating a line of their own and with those who feel the need to open new doors from a solid technical base.

Andrea’s module proposes a space to go through experiences and movement resources from presence, listening and creativity, starting from what each body already brings with it. Her approach is based on a simple but powerful idea: it is not about imposing an external form, but about recognizing what already exists, giving it body, naming it and developing it with greater clarity, confidence and depth.

The proposal works from the active listening of the body and from a sensitive relationship with movement, proposing a journey where each participant can expand resources, perception and presence. Throughout the module we will explore qualities of movement, rhythms, pauses, focuses, dissociations and other tools that will help to

to expand the body register, clarify the action and recognize the coherence of each performer on stage.

Andrea proposes a work where circus techniques, creative universes and dramaturgy with its own identity dialogue. The process is based on metaphorical slogans, in the group look, in the exchange and complicity as a basis for opening a space of trust. From there, each participant will be able to name, assume, embrace and transform his or her way of moving and saying, developing a freer and more conscious relationship with his or her own language.

Questions such as What happens when I stop correcting myself and start listening to myself, how can I develop more meaningful and powerful movements, what happens when I validate my own bodily qualities as part of my language? These questions are part of the kind of work that Andrea puts into play.

This is a particularly valuable module for those who want to gain confidence in their way of working, expand their expressive resources and develop their creativity from pleasure, desire and intuition without losing depth and direction. It can resonate with both artists who are already developing materials and people who need to open a space to discover and validate what their body already knows.

An experience that continues beyond the meeting

What happens in Creative Courses for Circus does not end at the end of each session. The program is designed to leave tools, questions and resources that can continue to accompany each participant in their own journeys, whether on stage, in artistic practice or in pedagogical contexts.

Rather than transmitting a single way of doing, this proposal recognizes the diversity of trajectories, styles and sensibilities that coexist within the circus. Each module opens a different door, but they all share the same intention: to offer concrete tools to expand resources, organize materials and continue developing creativity from a place of its own.

Creative Courses for Circus is a space to stop, try, refine and discover new work possibilities. A formative experience that seeks to leave a mark beyond the days of the meeting.

Mentoring

Gabriela Parigi

Acrobat, actress and artistic director, Gabriela Parigi is co-creator of Proyecto Migra and pedagogical director of EUREKA professional training in Buenos Aires. She trained as a high performance gymnast and later in the circus schools La Arena, in Argentina, and Le Lido, in France. She has worked with companies such as Les 7 doigts de la main and La Arena, and currently performs in her solo Consagrada and in the show Un Domingo. As a trainer and director, she promotes pedagogical and scenic projects between Latin America and Europe, betting on a poetic, critical and deeply personal circus.

Teresa G. Valenzuela

Movement artist and pedagogue, Teresa G. Valenzuela has been working the body as a space of presence, communication and creativity for more than 25 years. Through practices of attention, listening and play, she accompanies scenic processes in diverse contexts, always from sensitivity, bonding and authenticity. Her work invites to inhabit uncertainty as an engine, to awaken body awareness and to develop a more alive and conscious relationship with movement.

Alba Sarraute

Stage director, actress, clown and acrobat, Alba Sarraute has built her own stage language that crosses the intimate with the spectacular, the physical with the symbolic. With a solid international career, she has created and directed pieces such as Mirando a Yukali and Desdèmona, and has received the Premi Nacional de Cultura de Catalunya. His scenic and pedagogical work focuses on the body as an expressive power, and proposes processes where emotion, presence and physical commitment acquire a central place.

Andrea Schult

Circus artist, educator and lifelong learner, Andrea Schulte trained at La Arena in Argentina and at Le Lido in France. Her career is crossed by projects that link circus with international exchanges in Palestine, Argentina, Morocco, Germany, Finland and Cambodia, as well as by very diverse stage experiences, from street shows to collaborations with Cirque Plume and work in specific contexts such as prisons or a psychiatric clinic for minors. Currently, her research moves between nature, movement, the power of softness and ecofeminism. She collaborates with the Cie Singulière, the Cie D’IElles, the collective Ici en Crobatie and the Cie NDE, accompanies other companies as external look and artistic direction, and teaches seminars on movement for creativity at ESACTO-Lido and FOCON.

Ma-Nô

Stage management residencies

Ma-Nô is NEXO’s residency program with stage mentorship. A space designed to support works in progress that are going through moments of exploration, transformation, or definition, offering time, attention, and an external perspective in a carefully nurturing environment.

Ma-Nô is born from an idea of ​​pause, space in between, and accompaniment. It names that moment when a piece is not yet finished, but already asks for time, attention, and context to continue growing; and it also suggests something simpler and more intimate: the possibility of accompanying a process and walking hand in hand with it for a stretch of the journey.

We are interested in opening a place where processes can be sustained without haste, with space to test, revise, reformulate and refine. Ma-Nô no está planteado como un dispositivo para cerrar obras a toda costa, sino como un acompañamiento artístico que permita a cada proyecto seguir desarrollándose desde sus propias necesidades.

In this edition, Ma-Nô will be accompanying four projectseach of them linked to a main mentoring figure. The accompaniment will be provided by Gaby Parigi, Alba Sarraute and Kasper Vandenberghe, who will mentor two of the selected projects.who will mentor two of the selected projects.

Each residency proposes a concentrated time of work where we can look at the material in more depth, order what already exists, open new questions and continue building from the practice, the scene and listening. Mentoring does not work as an imposed direction, but as a relationship of accompaniment, exchange and shared thinking.

Each selected project will participate in six days of residency and mentoring, from Monday to Saturday, within the context of NEXO. The proposal combines three hours of daily accompaniment with the assigned mentor and room availability for autonomous work during the residency, with a maximum of five additional hours per day. We are interested that this time allows us not only to receive an external view, but also to put into practice what we have worked on, review materials and continue developing the process in depth.

Ma-Nô is part of the NEXO ecosystem and is part of a way of understanding the current circus where training, processes, scene and community coexist in relation. To after the end of the residency, the projects will share part of their journey at UMBRALNEXO’s open day for the public, in which advanced creative processes that can now be opened to the external gaze are presented.

Ma-Nô is aimed at artists and companies with pieces in progress that are at a sufficiently advanced stage of development to benefit from intensive stage mentoring and a public opening within the framework of NEXO.

We are looking for projects with a work base already underway, that want to dedicate specific time to review, refine, reorganize or grow their proposal in dialogue with an external perspective.

Scenic projects in process linked to the current circus, with their own line of work and a route already initiated. We are interested in pieces that can take advantage of a context of intensive accompaniment and that are able to share a moment of their development within UMBRAL.

We look for pieces that are going through questions, moments of change or need clarity in their direction, structure or meaning.

It doesn’t matter what tradition you come from or what scenic language you use: if you are working from the circus, Ma-Nô can be a space to accompany your process as it is and help it unfold at the right moment.

Kasper Vandenberghe

Director, actor and performer, Kasper Vandenberghe is the founder of MOVEDBYMATTER. After a long career as a performer in Jan Fabre’s company Troubleyn, he develops his own line of research and scenic creation. His work explores the relationship between theatricality, physicality and movement as a dramatic language, and accompanies processes from a precise and attentive external look at composition, structure and creative risk.

Accompaniment in Ma-Nô

At Ma-Nô, Kasper accompanies projects that already have an active base and need time for revision, composition and decision making. His work can be especially useful for pieces in an intermediate or advanced stage that want to gain clarity in structure, rhythm and relationship to the audience. His mentorship helps to sort out what is already at stake in the piece, better understand what the material needs, and further develop it with an accurate outside eye. In this edition, Kasper will accompany two of the selected projects.

QOROQ

QOROQ is a show for all audiences. It is able to connect with those who enjoy the most physical and technical circus as well as with those who are looking for a suggestive, immersive and accessible scenic experience based on image, rhythm and emotion. It was also recognized with the Emilio Zapatero Award for Best Circus Show at the TAC 2024 in Valladolid.

QOROQ is a circus show by Kolektiv Lapso Cirkque builds a scenic universe of great visual force from wood, balance, acrobatics and live music. On stage, two acrobats transform beams and objects into ephemeral architectures, trust games and impossible balances, in constant dialogue with a spectacular autonomous structure of large dimensions that extends the verticality of the piece and turns the space into an enveloping experience. The floor covered with granulated cork, like a sand suspended between desert and island, completely modifies the perception of risk, fall and movement, and gives rise to an austere yet striking mise-en-scene, where each element has presence and meaning. The piece delves into the work of balancing on wood, manipulation of objects, acrobatics and physical construction at height, deploying a very precise research on collaboration, fragility and the relationship between bodies and materials. To this is added the presence of the live cello, which accompanies the action and reinforces the atmosphere of the show. The critics have underlined precisely this capacity to fascinate from the simplicity of the elements and the power of its constructions, as well as the affiliation of its imaginary with a circus of great formal rigor and a strong scenic personality.

ANÓNIMOS

To what extent are we capable of manipulating our own thoughts to escape reality?

Anónimos is a contemporary, sensitive and poetic dance and circus performance that immerses us in the subconscious of a woman who creates, through paper, a parallel reality: a dreamlike refuge where the passage of time becomes fleeting and light, giving rise to a longing for what has been forgotten.

With precise and imaginative staging, the piece blends dance, acrobatics, balancing acts, the manipulation of fantastical objects and surrealist puppets. A poetic and tragicomic world that offers a different perspective on loneliness, memory and the mechanisms we invent to protect ourselves from the world.

LA CRISIS DE LA IMAGINACIÓN

Every action, every desire and every decision first takes shape in our imagination. We imagine things before we venture out into the world.

But what if one day imagination were to disappear?

La crisis de la imaginación is a contemporary circus, dance and surrealist puppet show in which two characters invite us into a dreamlike, absurd and tragicomic world.

Through movement, acrobatics, object manipulation and a very unusual puppet, the piece weaves a fantastical tale that blurs the boundaries between the possible and the impossible.

A production brimming with humour, poetry and imagination, which recaptures the adventurous and dreamy spirit of childhood and shares it with adults too. A show for the whole family to enjoy together, reminding us that imagination can also be a way of looking at the world.

On stage, two acrobats transform beams and objects into ephemeral architectures, trust games and impossible balances, in constant dialogue with a spectacular autonomous structure of large dimensions that extends the verticality of the piece and turns the space into an enveloping experience. The floor covered with granulated cork, like a sand suspended between desert and island, completely modifies the perception of risk, fall and movement, and gives rise to an austere yet striking mise-en-scene, where each element has presence and meaning. The piece delves into the work of balancing on wood, manipulation of objects, acrobatics and physical construction at height, deploying a very precise research on collaboration, fragility and the relationship between bodies and materials. To this is added the presence of the live cello, which accompanies the action and reinforces the atmosphere of the show. The critics have underlined precisely this capacity to fascinate from the simplicity of the elements and the power of its constructions, as well as the affiliation of its imaginary with a circus of great formal rigor and a strong scenic personality.

Anónimos is a contemporary, sensitive and poetic dance and circus performance that immerses us in the subconscious of a woman who creates, through paper, a parallel reality: a dreamlike refuge where the passage of time becomes fleeting and light, giving rise to a longing for what has been forgotten.

With precise and imaginative staging, the piece blends dance, acrobatics, balancing acts, the manipulation of fantastical objects and surrealist puppets. A poetic and tragicomic world that offers a different perspective on loneliness, memory and the mechanisms we invent to protect ourselves from the world.

for Circus

Creative Courses for Circus is NEXO’s training program. An intensive course designed for artists and practitioners looking for new creative tools and a space to activate their relationship with the scene from the body, dramaturgy, composition and presence.

It is a training proposal composed of different modules and methodologies that coexist within the same itinerary. It does not work with apparatuses: the focus is on circus creativity, on scenic tools and on the possibility of opening new ways to think, build and develop one’s own materials.

In Creative Courses for Circus we understand training as a place where creativity can be put into practice, refined and find new directions. We are interested in working from concrete tools, without separating thought, body and scene, and opening a space where each participant can continue building from what he/she already brings.

More than a sum of classes, the program proposes a shared journey where each module contributes a specific perspective and, at the same time, is part of a common experience. We want participants to take away resources that can be applied to their own paths, whether they are just beginning a search or are already developing materials, ideas or pieces.

In this edition, Creative Courses for Circus will bring together several modules guided by guest artists, each with a particular view on dramaturgy, the body, composition and scenic thinking. Together they make up a diverse and complementary path, each with a common goal: to activate circus creativity through practice.

Creative Courses for Circus is aimed at circus artists and practitioners of all backgrounds and styles, as well as people from other performing arts disciplines interested in incorporating new creative tools, strengthening their relationship with the stage and further developing their own resources.

It is a proposal designed for people who want to stop, try, order ideas, open new possibilities and take away concrete methodological materials for future processes.

CCC offers an immersive training experience, where practice and reflection are intertwined. Each module activates a different approach, but they are all part of a common journey aimed at strengthening circus creativity and offering concrete tools to continue working beyond the meeting.

The aim here is not to arrive at a closed result, but to open up resources, questions and materials that can continue to accompany each participant in his or her artistic, pedagogical or scenic journey.

The program brings together several modules guided by invited artist-trainers, each with a particular view on dramaturgy, the body, composition and scenic thought. Together they make up a diverse and complementary path, crossed by the same will: to activate circus creativity from practice.

Four modules, four points of view, a shared journey

Each module is guided by a trainer with a particular perspective on the body, dramaturgy, composition, play and the relationship with the stage. Together they form a diverse and complementary journey, where each participant can approach different tools, methodologies and ways of working on circus creativity.

More than isolated proposals, the modules are part of a common experience. Each one opens a different access, but all of them share the will to accompany, expand resources and offer a base that can continue to be deployed beyond the course.

Alba Sarraute’s module proposes a journey around dramaturgy as a tool to give shape, structure and depth to a stage proposal. It is designed for those who want to develop an idea, a number, a scene or a material in process, and need tools to better understand what they are telling, how it is organized on stage and what decisions can help the proposal gain clarity, direction and meaning.

It is not only about writing or thinking a story from the head, but also about building dramaturgy from the body, movement, presence and action. Through writing exercises, analysis and creative exploration, the work accompanies each participant in the task of discovering what moves him/her, what he/she wants to express and how to sustain it scenically without losing singularity.

Durant el mòdul, explorarem temes com el nucli temàtic i conceptual d’una proposta, el desenvolupament de personatges, la progressió dramàtica, el to, el ritme i l’estructura global d’una escena o d’una actuació. Questions like ‘What do I really want to convey?’, ‘From whose perspective am I telling the story?’, ‘How does an intuition become a stage structure?’, or ‘What does this production need to better connect with its audience?’ – these are the kinds of questions Alba explores in her work.

This is a particularly valuable module for artists who are already developing a piece as well as for people who want to begin to organize materials, recognize a possible direction and acquire dramaturgical tools applicable to future processes. The objective is not to impose a formula, but to offer concrete resources so that each participant can build a more conscious and more refined relationship with the dramaturgy of his or her own work.

Teresa G. Valenzuela’s module opens a space for research on the body, space and play as motors of presence, perception and creativity. Her proposal invites us to explore how we move, how we perceive, how we relate to the environment and how all this can become scenic material. It is aimed both at artists who already work from the body and at people who want to open a more sensitive, more attentive and more available relationship with their practice.

The work is based on listening, attention and body exploration, understanding that movement is not only a technique, but also a way of creating, communicating and being on stage. Through play, perception and different research dynamics, the module proposes tools to cultivate a more refined presence, a more organic communication and a more conscious relationship with the space and with other people.

Teresa works from a broad perspective that brings together elements drawn from movement, experiential anatomy, somatic practices and improvisation. But beyond names or methods, what matters here is the experience: What happens when I stop trying to control everything and start listening? How does my presence on stage change if I pay attention to the space? What emerges when play ceases to be merely incidental and becomes a genuine working tool? These are the kinds of questions that run through the module.

This module is especially interesting for those who wish to broaden their physical listening, enrich their stage presence and find resources applicable not only to artistic processes, but also to pedagogical or collective contexts. The module does not require previous experience, but a willingness to investigate from the body, perception and relationship.

Gaby Parigi’s module offers a workshop focusing on the relationship between technique, composition and stagecraft. It is based on the idea that what each artist already brings with them—their technical skills, their imagination, their experience, their way of being—can become material for the stage if it finds the right context in which to be explored, challenged and developed. It is designed for those who wish to go beyond technical execution and explore new expressive possibilities based on what they have already mastered.

Through improvisation, physical writing, the creation of images and the exploration of different registers, the module accompanies those who want to expand their expressive capacity and develop their own dramaturgy. The work focuses on mutability, changes of register, the creation of characters, the emergence of poetic images and the possibility of building a scene without losing anchorage in corporal practice.

Gaby propone un laboratorio donde la técnica no desaparece, pero deja de ser el único centro. It becomes a starting point, an excuse, a springboard or a base from which to raise further questions: What else might emerge from what I’m already doing? How can I shift register without losing authenticity? What images, characters or theatrical worlds arise from my own physicality? How does one construct a poetics without detaching it from the body? That intersection between precision and openness lies at the very heart of her work.

This is an especially valuable module for artists who want to leave familiar places, expand expressive resources and give more depth, structure and uniqueness to their stage work. It can resonate both with those who are already investigating a line of their own and with those who feel the need to open new doors from a solid technical base.

Andrea’s module proposes a space to go through experiences and movement resources from presence, listening and creativity, starting from what each body already brings with it. Her approach is based on a simple but powerful idea: it is not about imposing an external form, but about recognizing what already exists, giving it body, naming it and developing it with greater clarity, confidence and depth.

The proposal works from the active listening of the body and from a sensitive relationship with movement, proposing a journey where each participant can expand resources, perception and presence. Throughout the module we will explore qualities of movement, rhythms, pauses, focuses, dissociations and other tools that will help to

to expand the body register, clarify the action and recognize the coherence of each performer on stage.

Andrea proposes a work where circus techniques, creative universes and dramaturgy with its own identity dialogue. The process is based on metaphorical slogans, in the group look, in the exchange and complicity as a basis for opening a space of trust. From there, each participant will be able to name, assume, embrace and transform his or her way of moving and saying, developing a freer and more conscious relationship with his or her own language.

Questions such as What happens when I stop correcting myself and start listening to myself, how can I develop more meaningful and powerful movements, what happens when I validate my own bodily qualities as part of my language? These questions are part of the kind of work that Andrea puts into play.

This is a particularly valuable module for those who want to gain confidence in their way of working, expand their expressive resources and develop their creativity from pleasure, desire and intuition without losing depth and direction. It can resonate with both artists who are already developing materials and people who need to open a space to discover and validate what their body already knows.

An experience that continues beyond the meeting

What happens in Creative Courses for Circus does not end at the end of each session. The program is designed to leave tools, questions and resources that can continue to accompany each participant in their own journeys, whether on stage, in artistic practice or in pedagogical contexts.

Rather than transmitting a single way of doing, this proposal recognizes the diversity of trajectories, styles and sensibilities that coexist within the circus. Each module opens a different door, but they all share the same intention: to offer concrete tools to expand resources, organize materials and continue developing creativity from a place of its own.

Creative Courses for Circus is a space to stop, try, refine and discover new work possibilities. A formative experience that seeks to leave a mark beyond the days of the meeting.

Mentoring

Gabriela Parigi

Acrobat, actress and artistic director, Gabriela Parigi is co-creator of Proyecto Migra and pedagogical director of EUREKA professional training in Buenos Aires. She trained as a high performance gymnast and later in the circus schools La Arena, in Argentina, and Le Lido, in France. She has worked with companies such as Les 7 doigts de la main and La Arena, and currently performs in her solo Consagrada and in the show Un Domingo. As a trainer and director, she promotes pedagogical and scenic projects between Latin America and Europe, betting on a poetic, critical and deeply personal circus.

Teresa G. Valenzuela

Movement artist and pedagogue, Teresa G. Valenzuela has been working the body as a space of presence, communication and creativity for more than 25 years. Through practices of attention, listening and play, she accompanies scenic processes in diverse contexts, always from sensitivity, bonding and authenticity. Her work invites to inhabit uncertainty as an engine, to awaken body awareness and to develop a more alive and conscious relationship with movement.

Alba Sarraute

Stage director, actress, clown and acrobat, Alba Sarraute has built her own stage language that crosses the intimate with the spectacular, the physical with the symbolic. With a solid international career, she has created and directed pieces such as Mirando a Yukali and Desdèmona, and has received the Premi Nacional de Cultura de Catalunya. His scenic and pedagogical work focuses on the body as an expressive power, and proposes processes where emotion, presence and physical commitment acquire a central place.

Andrea Schult

Circus artist, educator and lifelong learner, Andrea Schulte trained at La Arena in Argentina and at Le Lido in France. Her career is crossed by projects that link circus with international exchanges in Palestine, Argentina, Morocco, Germany, Finland and Cambodia, as well as by very diverse stage experiences, from street shows to collaborations with Cirque Plume and work in specific contexts such as prisons or a psychiatric clinic for minors. Currently, her research moves between nature, movement, the power of softness and ecofeminism. She collaborates with the Cie Singulière, the Cie D’IElles, the collective Ici en Crobatie and the Cie NDE, accompanies other companies as external look and artistic direction, and teaches seminars on movement for creativity at ESACTO-Lido and FOCON.

Ma-Nô

Stage management residencies

Ma-Nô is NEXO’s residency program with stage mentorship. A space designed to support works in progress that are going through moments of exploration, transformation, or definition, offering time, attention, and an external perspective in a carefully nurturing environment.

Ma-Nô is born from an idea of ​​pause, space in between, and accompaniment. It names that moment when a piece is not yet finished, but already asks for time, attention, and context to continue growing; and it also suggests something simpler and more intimate: the possibility of accompanying a process and walking hand in hand with it for a stretch of the journey.

We are interested in opening a place where processes can be sustained without haste, with space to test, revise, reformulate and refine. Ma-Nô no está planteado como un dispositivo para cerrar obras a toda costa, sino como un acompañamiento artístico que permita a cada proyecto seguir desarrollándose desde sus propias necesidades.

In this edition, Ma-Nô will be accompanying four projectseach of them linked to a main mentoring figure. The accompaniment will be provided by Gaby Parigi, Alba Sarraute and Kasper Vandenberghe, who will mentor two of the selected projects.who will mentor two of the selected projects.

Each residency proposes a concentrated time of work where we can look at the material in more depth, order what already exists, open new questions and continue building from the practice, the scene and listening. Mentoring does not work as an imposed direction, but as a relationship of accompaniment, exchange and shared thinking.

Each selected project will participate in six days of residency and mentoring, from Monday to Saturday, within the context of NEXO. The proposal combines three hours of daily accompaniment with the assigned mentor and room availability for autonomous work during the residency, with a maximum of five additional hours per day. We are interested that this time allows us not only to receive an external view, but also to put into practice what we have worked on, review materials and continue developing the process in depth.

Ma-Nô is part of the NEXO ecosystem and is part of a way of understanding the current circus where training, processes, scene and community coexist in relation. To after the end of the residency, the projects will share part of their journey at UMBRALNEXO’s open day for the public, in which advanced creative processes that can now be opened to the external gaze are presented.

Ma-Nô is aimed at artists and companies with pieces in progress that are at a sufficiently advanced stage of development to benefit from intensive stage mentoring and a public opening within the framework of NEXO.

We are looking for projects with a work base already underway, that want to dedicate specific time to review, refine, reorganize or grow their proposal in dialogue with an external perspective.

Scenic projects in process linked to the current circus, with their own line of work and a route already initiated. We are interested in pieces that can take advantage of a context of intensive accompaniment and that are able to share a moment of their development within UMBRAL.

We look for pieces that are going through questions, moments of change or need clarity in their direction, structure or meaning.

It doesn’t matter what tradition you come from or what scenic language you use: if you are working from the circus, Ma-Nô can be a space to accompany your process as it is and help it unfold at the right moment.

Director, actor and performer, Kasper Vandenberghe is the founder of MOVEDBYMATTER. After a long career as a performer in Jan Fabre’s company Troubleyn, he develops his own line of research and scenic creation. His work explores the relationship between theatricality, physicality and movement as a dramatic language, and accompanies processes from a precise and attentive external look at composition, structure and creative risk.

Accompaniment in Ma-Nô

At Ma-Nô, Kasper accompanies projects that already have an active base and need time for revision, composition and decision making. His work can be especially useful for pieces in an intermediate or advanced stage that want to gain clarity in structure, rhythm and relationship to the audience. His mentorship helps to sort out what is already at stake in the piece, better understand what the material needs, and further develop it with an accurate outside eye. In this edition, Kasper will accompany two of the selected projects.

QOROQ is a show for all audiences. It is able to connect with those who enjoy the most physical and technical circus as well as with those who are looking for a suggestive, immersive and accessible scenic experience based on image, rhythm and emotion. It was also recognized with the Emilio Zapatero Award for Best Circus Show at the TAC 2024 in Valladolid.

QOROQ is a circus show by Kolektiv Lapso Cirkque builds a scenic universe of great visual force from wood, balance, acrobatics and live music. On stage, two acrobats transform beams and objects into ephemeral architectures, trust games and impossible balances, in constant dialogue with a spectacular autonomous structure of large dimensions that extends the verticality of the piece and turns the space into an enveloping experience. The floor covered with granulated cork, like a sand suspended between desert and island, completely modifies the perception of risk, fall and movement, and gives rise to an austere yet striking mise-en-scene, where each element has presence and meaning. The piece delves into the work of balancing on wood, manipulation of objects, acrobatics and physical construction at height, deploying a very precise research on collaboration, fragility and the relationship between bodies and materials. To this is added the presence of the live cello, which accompanies the action and reinforces the atmosphere of the show. The critics have underlined precisely this capacity to fascinate from the simplicity of the elements and the power of its constructions, as well as the affiliation of its imaginary with a circus of great formal rigor and a strong scenic personality.

With precise and imaginative staging, the piece blends dance, acrobatics, balancing acts, the manipulation of fantastical objects and surrealist puppets. A poetic and tragicomic world that offers a different perspective on loneliness, memory and the mechanisms we invent to protect ourselves from the world.

Every action, every desire and every decision first takes shape in our imagination. We imagine things before we venture out into the world.

But what if one day imagination were to disappear?

La crisis de la imaginación is a contemporary circus, dance and surrealist puppet show in which two characters invite us into a dreamlike, absurd and tragicomic world.

Through movement, acrobatics, object manipulation and a very unusual puppet, the piece weaves a fantastical tale that blurs the boundaries between the possible and the impossible.

A production brimming with humour, poetry and imagination, which recaptures the adventurous and dreamy spirit of childhood and shares it with adults too. A show for the whole family to enjoy together, reminding us that imagination can also be a way of looking at the world.

The results of the Ma-Nô creative mentorships, a collective stage jam as an expression of the work done in the Creative Courses, and the stage research of resident artists in collaborating spaces such as La Central del Circ, Fabra i Coats and
projects selected through an open call will be shared.

A shared time to look at what beats, what seeks form, what can be seen without the need to be finished.

Here there are no judgments or results, but listening, risk, testing and dialogue.

Each exhibition is a way of inhabiting the threshold: that place where the scenic begins to take shape, still in movement.
